After Doubletake, I feared that Thurman had written herself into the proverbial corner. By revealing that Cal's Auphe-DNA would eventually override his human side, she made our anti-hero into a ticking time bomb to villainy. I wasn't sure where she could go after that. Slashback is the answer - into the past.

This book is more like the first three of the series, with Cal and Niko after a killer, and in over their heads. Naturally, Robin gets pulled into the action to provide insight and witty repartee. So, back to basics. However, half this book is a flashback to twelve years prior when Cal was only 11 and Niko 15. Told from Niko's POV, we learn about a serial killer that lived next door to them, who is somehow connected to their current situation, which is told mostly from Cal's POV. All this is really an excuse for Niko to have a "breakdown" and Cal to recognize how much he has come to enjoy violence - and what that means for their relationship. He's relied upon his brother to stop him from becoming a monster. But, what if he has reached the point where Niko isn't able to do so? There's a bit of angst, some soul-searching and a few revelations from Robin that had been hinted at and everything is wrapped up. The only difference is now Cal has to figure out how to kill Grimm without becoming the very thing he's trying to defeat.

Though I enjoyed the story, it didn't grab me by the throat like previous entries. The case is actually rather perfunctory. Cal and Niko face the villain multiple times, getting their butts kicked in the process, but continue investigating until they finally defeat him. Just like previous plots. I put the book down many times over the course of a week because nothing critical was happening. I'm not sure where this series can go, though the groundwork appears to have been laid for a crossover with the Trickster series. That has a lot of potential to be fun. Overall, fans of the series will enjoy this but it didn't satisfy me as much as previous books.

Slashback Cal Leandros Rob Thurman 9780451465023 Books Reviews

I've now finished SLASHBACK, the latest in the Cal Leandros series. Each book has pulled me into the world where Niko and Cal Leandros battle the supernatural monsters of the world, and occasionally those that are just human monsters.

Cal is a half-breed. Born of a gypsy woman who was paid to bear the child of a race who had once been the top predator in existence. Their numbers had decreased dramatically with the burgeoning birth rate of humans, and they made a plan to create a half-breed that would enable them to return to the world and take their rightful place.

What none of the monsters ever count on is the bond that exists between the brothers, nor their intense survival instinct. They have made themselves into the best monster killers that exist, and done it through hard work, learning as many weapons as they can, and never letting down their guard. Along the way they've picked up friends, much to their amazement. Friends who will go back to back with them against any monster they come across.

In the latest book, the monster they take on is skinning humans live and leaving behind bloody corpses. They learn that this particular monster believes he's saving sinners, sending them on to a better place. Exactly what he is, and how they can stop him, is the hard part of the journey. More, they discover a tie between this monster and one of the first human monsters they came across when Cal was 11 and Niko only 15.

The Cal Leandros books are emotionally involving, laugh out loud funny, and utterly terrifying. Every time I come to the end of one, I am left totally satisfied with the story. I am also always hungry for more. As long as Rob Thurman writes about Cal and Niko Leandros, I will be reading.
...and thank the powers that be that Rob Thurman's Leandros brothers have come again!

I have a crush on Niko and I want to go drinking with Cal. And I just want to have dinner with Goodfellow and Promise.

This book is crafty, suspenseful, cleverly presented and so well-written to make any writer sit up and take notice, then want to be Rob Thurman. The tale is expertly told between glimpses of the past and forays deep in the present as well as from the viewpoint of both brothers in alternating presentations. In the hands of most writers this exercise would be a confusing mess, but Rob handles it with ease, switching back and forth with purposeful, and rather seamlessly cool transitions. We feel we are intimately involved, not just in the story but caught within it. And the past reflections are necessary to understand the action in the present.

I adored this most recent tale in the continuing saga of the Leandros brothers. I felt this one, finally had so many questions answered and actually wanted to be with them. I do love books and good fantasy/fiction but rarely do I feel so connected to the action.

I have heard it said that Rob Thurman intends for only nine books in this series. This is #8. This story finale was immaculately finished and that it could be the end, but I sincerely hope there is at least one, last, big hurrah left to go. Read the story and you'll be with me on this wish.

Do you love brother bonding, high adventure, terrific suspense, anguish, surprise and the satisfaction of a voila moment? Then get this book! Now.

Friends go and then come. Promise, Rob? Pun intended. Looking forward to one more tale with eagerness and excitement. You've trained us well. Now let loose the Grendels!
