I've been reading this author for a few years now having started with her contemporary romance, and how I missed this one, I don't know. I love the theme of this book -- what happens if you find out that maybe you married the wrong person? What happens if your soul mate shows up after you've already committed to someone else? I should note that there is no cheating in this book as both parties do honor their vows.Daniel and Marienne are both married and are moving through their lives not particularly satisfied. When they meet, there's a connection between them that develops into a very strong friendship. Marienne is sweet and kind, the type of person that believes in the good in people. Daniel is an NYU professor. He's thoughtful and introspective. They totally hit it off together and their relationship fills that hole they didn't even know they had in their lives.
When their marriages fall apart, they have each other. Will they let their friendship turn into something else? This story was sometimes heart wrenching, sometimes humorous and definitely engaging for me. I've had many discussions with friends about where friendship comes into play in a marriage and I think this book examines that aspect of a relationship very well.
I really liked these two characters. They felt real to me, so I was able to feel right along with them as they struggle with their current relationship and turn to each other for the human connection they need, and they do it while still respecting their marriage vows. It's always interesting to examine where's that line when it comes to the dynamics of marriage - when does emotional intimacy equal breaking vows? I don't know the answer, but I loved that this book put a big spotlight on this issue in a very easy way. That's what I love about Karen Stivali's writing -- there's an ease and gentleness to it even when circumstances are full of conflict.
Loved this story and the characters. Definitely recommended. And I love the new cover!

The story of Marianne and Daniel is a fabulouly unconventional love story filled with characters so real that I felt like I knew them. With each new development in their friendship, I found myself hoping more and more that they would find a way to be together some day. I can't wait for the sequel to be released!
Loved the whole story! amazing writing! Felt like i was living their life!
Daniel is such a special caring guy! Anybody could love him! When he develops a special relationship with his new neighbors, sparks fly! Loved the hanging out and friendships and trust between the spouses!! Why wouldn't he fall in love with Marienne! A great baker, hostess," single"mom, lover, housewife, daughter in law! List goes on! Loved it! Really fast reading!,
I can't think of enough good things to say about this book! Daniel is the epitome of your fantasy man come to life ( but yet completely believable due to Ms. Stivali's great writing) and although you may want to hate Marienne for being the object of Daniel's affections, it is ultimately impossible because you will love her too--and their story most of all. I will caution you, however, that you may find yourself highly unproductive at home and/or work because once you start reading this book you will not want to put it down!! Enjoy and check out Karen Stivali's other great reads as well--Always YouMarry MeLong-Distance LoversForeign Affairs
I couldn't read Meant To Be fast enough. I absolutely adored the main characters, Marienne and Daniel. They had me firmly in their clutches from the word go (and please, Daniel, put me in your very capable clutches) that I couldn't keep from thinking about them, wondering what would happen. Their complex and unconventional relationship rings true at every turn, allowing them to leap off the page and worm their way into your psyche. Meant To Be is a compelling, funny and sweet tale that will break your heart and put it all back together.
Ok here I go, I got this book because it was recommended by my ultimate favorite author Tiffany Reisz , so knowing she is great I figured her recommendation was going to be a good one. It sure is the story is great I live Marienne and I adore Daniel. They make the entire book amazing . It has all the good words to keep you reading, I will say my favorite part is that it does not end I am reading the second book now and is much much better and jucier yummy.
Thanks for the recommendation. Ohhhh but I am jealous because you have read Mistress from the Original Sinners series and I am dying , be kind and email me with some thing ,,,, I am starving for that book,
Ugh this book is so Bad and yet sooo of GOOD! What I meant by so bad are spouses of Daniel and Marianne. They were terrible and I kept hoping they would stop wasting time and see that they were meant to be. This author did an amazing job of building a friendship that turns into love. I love how it didn't come across as being rushed and that you fell in love with them and hoped they would find happiness. I would totally recommend that everyone give this awesome book a read because you will get hooked as I did. Happy reading!
As expected, Karen Stivali's first full length novel is wonderful. You will love Daniel; he's the perfect man for a smart, caring woman; and you'll also love Marienne and their friendship. They both come alive in this book, and you'll feel for them as they nurture and grow their friendship with all the trials and tribulations that inevitably arise, the first of which is that they're both married, but not to each other. Being basically good people, they try to do the right things by each other and by their respective spouses. Even when their way is clear, they still hesitate, afraid to spoil the lovely friendship that they have. The tension builds as the novel progresses, but this is your basic friendship to romance story done to perfection. Ms. Stivali has a strong understanding of human behavior and her characters come alive in Meant to Be. I look forward to reading more by this author.
