I don't remember anymore how I discovered "Frazz"--I think it was when somebody was speculating that Bill Watterson has come out of retirement and is drawing a new strip. It's hard not to believe that of "Frazz" (actually by Jef Mallett)--the art style is evocative of C&H, and so is the smart, insightful and slightly off-kilter writing. The character Frazz, a successful songwriter who keeps his job as a janitor because he likes the kids, even resembles a grown-up Calvin (but no Hobbes is in evidence--in fact, Frazz occupies a role similar to that of Hobbes: a wise but still cool and fun friend to all the kids at Bryson Elementary, while the Calvin role is neatly filled by Caulfield, the bright eight-year-old who finds learning fun but school hopelessly boring.)What impresses me most about "Frazz" as a strip is the sheer *intelligence* of the writing: some of these strips you have to *think* about for a few seconds after you read them, and that *aha*! moment is something I don't see nearly enough in comic strips these days. You might even learn something while reading "Frazz," but you won't even notice because you'll be too busy chuckling. This first collection is great and I look forward to collecting many more.

Frazz was around for a year or so before I discovered it. And then I only got the Sunday paper. To make up for lost strips I ordered this book. I love it! The comics take me back to my childhood in Michigan when our school bus driver was also our janitor, and a great guy.
I can say that I will be purchasing all comics of 'Frazz' and keeping them alongside my 'Calvin and Hobbes' books in my library. Thank you Jef Mallett.
"Frazz" is the best comic strip since "Calvin and Hobbes"! I bought all three books and love them!
I ran across Frazz online--and by accident. I could see the cartoon squashed up and (probably like many) I thought I was looking at an old Calvin & Hobbes strip.
Frazz is an independently wealthy singer-songwriter who spends his days as a janitor at Bryson Elementary.
Not only is the strip flat-out funny, but there a number of cultural and literary references for those looking for an 'inside joke'.
Any collection of Frazz would be a joy. This was my first.
Frazz is great and my 8-year-old granddaughter agrees.
Why am I only learning about Frazz just recently? It boggles my mind that newspapers run zombie comics long after the death of their creators (whether physical or creative) instead of new work like this -- fortunately, these books are even better than reading in the paper, printed larger and better-quality. They're also much better quality than reading online, particularly the full-color comics.
It's really hard to resist comparisons to Calvin and Hobbes. Frazz has a lot of the elements that made that comic great, even leaving aside the obvious stylistic similarities there are no "bad guys" in this comic, everyone gets some measure of Mallett's respect. The comic's sense of humor manages to be both inoffensive and actually funny.
I discovered "Frazz" only several months ago. Although past episodes can be viewed elsewhere on the Web (search), it is more convenient to use this compilation. For me, "Frazz" is an "upper"--humorous with (almost) every episode carrying a moral, truism, or observation of life from an adult viewpoint. A worthy companion to "Pogo", "Peanuts", "Calvin & Hobbes".
If you are not already familiar with the Frazz comic strip, you are missing out on one of the more thoughtful and well written comics that are currently in syndication. Jef Mallett displays keen observational insight concerning people and life experiences through the eyes of an elementary school janitor and it's students and faculty, and usually leaves you thinking and laughing at the end of each strip. Live at Bryson Elementary is a collection of comics from the beginning of the strip's history, and you will see a little bit of subtle difference in the appearance of the characters as the series progresses. This book would make a great introduction to the world of Frazz for the uninitiated, or a great trip down memory lane for those who have been in the know for years.
