The Maid A Novel of Joan of Arc Kimberly Cutter Books
I became quite intereted in "Joan of Arc" after watching a 1940/50s movie. I selected this book because it was written by a noted author and my professional interest in psychology and history. of course, I understood that this account of her life utilized known facts as well as some author researched suspicions about the type of behavior that might be manifested by a young woman who was inspired by "heavenly" visions to take on the personal charge to save France. Every page is a turner and Joan's character as well as her personality are well developed as you move along in the book. This period of history is faught with challenging events and this is the background for a most interesting historical figure.Tags : Amazon.com: The Maid: A Novel of Joan of Arc (9780547427522): Kimberly Cutter: Books,Kimberly Cutter,The Maid: A Novel of Joan of Arc,Houghton Mifflin Harcourt,0547427522,Biographical,Biographical fiction.,Christian women saints;Fiction.,France;History;Charles VII, 1422-1461;Fiction.,1412-1431,American Historical Fiction,Charles VII, 1422-1461,Christian women saints,FICTION Biographical,FICTION Historical General,Fiction,Fiction - Historical,France,Historical - General,History,Joan,,of Arc, Saint,
The Maid A Novel of Joan of Arc Kimberly Cutter Books Reviews
This was a great insight to the life of Joan of arc. It really gives the reader a realistic view of what Jean endured when she first experience her visions. How she convinced so many people (including the future king of France) of her being the maid called by God to free France. Also, how experienced life in the battlefield with all these soldiers around her.
This book is a quick read no doubt, but it brings to life the story of Joan of Arc, one of history's greatest female figures. The writer is good, but it lacks for depth and content. With a woman like her, I would want at least 400 pages. That really is the only reason for the lack of one star in the review.
Despite that I found it really good, and will look out for more from this author in the future.
A decent enough book from top to bottom. Not the best but an enjoyable tale of her story. The writing is decent and admittedly the ending was interesting (you all know what happens but a twist she puts in there is intriguing) but all in all you could do a lot worse (not a lot better) than reading this for pleasure.
This book had me mesmerized. I have always wanted to know more about Joan of Arc but thought any book would be filled with boring historical stuff. Not this book! Although it is basically a true story and historically sound it is written to hold the readers attention. I found it difficult to put down.
I would recommend this book. The story of Joan of Arc is fascinating and well documented. This book is a novel, therefore the author has taken "artistic" liberties, creating scenarios that would appeal to a general audience. Obviously no one really knows Joan of Arc's thoughts. But even with that I enjoyed the book and it motivated me to find out more about Joan of Arc and read more historical based writings.
This is a fictionalized biography which achieves the difficult feat of humanizing a legend while neither sentimentalizing nor diminishing her. Ms. Cutter's Joan is a teenage girl with all the normal concerns of a teenage girl who has the additional burden of saving her country.
The Church and the "nobility" do not come off well. The portrayal of the loutish soldiers is entirely consistent with accounts by professional historians.
I raced through this book.
This is a pretty good read. I haven't found many historical fiction novels on Joan of Arc before, so I was really pleased to have found this one. The only thing I will say is that the main character could have grown and developed a bit more throughout the book. The fact that she felt like she was doing the will of God was apparent, but I think we could have heard more about her internal struggles and thoughts surrounding this unusual occurrence. All in all a worthwhile read, though.
